Basic Questions
The model behind short drama apps is simple. What you watch are bite-size vertical episodes. The first few are free. After that, episodes cost coins or a pass. That split drives most confusion. Begin with the five answers below.
What is a short drama app?
It streams vertical video that is made for phones. Each series comes in many tiny episodes. Plots lean toward billionaires, revenge and identity reveals. Werewolf romances are popular too. Leading the pack are ReelShort, reel shorts DramaBox, ShortMax and My Drama. The format originated in China as duanju.
How long is each episode?
Most come in at one to two minutes. Productions in the West often aim for 60 to 100 seconds. Usually, a series runs to 20 to 100 episodes. For Married at First Sight, ReelShort lists 90. Its hit Double Life series lists 60. A full series can be as long as a movie.
Why do episodes stop right at cliffhangers?
That is usually the spot where free episodes end. ReelShort says its first 5 to 15 episodes are usually free. Industry reporting points to 8 to 10. The paywall tends to fall at peak suspense. That timing is exactly the business model. It also ranks as a top complaint among viewers.
Who are the owners of ReelShort, DramaBox and My Drama?
ReelShort belongs to Crazy Maple Studio in Sunnyvale, California. Behind that studio is China’s COL Group. Running DramaBox is Singapore’s StoryMatrix, which is part of Beijing Dianzhong Technology. Making My Drama is Holywater, founded in Kyiv in 2020. Fox Entertainment acquired an equity stake in October 2025. In terms of launch dates, ReelShort arrived in 2022, and DramaBox in 2023.
Can I watch in a browser or on TV?
Yes, within limits. ReelShort’s website accepts Google, Facebook, Apple, TikTok and email logins. The app and the site share your progress. Only the app offers free unlocks. My Drama runs a dedicated Apple TV app. We did not find a verified ReelShort TV app.
What It Costs
Money questions arise most. Figures are US App Store prices as of September 2026. Country, platform and promotion all change them. Take each number as approximate. Before anything else, always look at the price screen. Below is what listings show.
Is ReelShort free to watch?
Partly, and the free portion is genuine. People searching “is reel short free” or “is reel short app free” are looking for the catch. The opening episodes are free. It costs nothing to download. Coins or a VIP pass are needed for the later ones. Free coins come from ads and check-ins.
How does the coin system work?
The currency that unlocks episodes is coins. According to ReelShort’s blog, an episode costs around 60 coins. The smallest pack costs about $4.99 for 500 coins. Bigger packs tack on extra coins. A 7-day check-in streak brings 100+ coins. Watching one rewarded ad unlocks two episodes.
Can coins expire?
The answer depends on the app. According to ReelShort, free reward coins usually expire. Coins you paid for do not. My Drama handles this differently. Under its terms, coins are forfeited after 12 months of inactivity. Keep active and spend reward coins first.
How much does a weekly pass cost?
Roughly $19.99 a week is the common US price. You will see it listed by ReelShort, ShortMax, DramaWave, GoodShort and My Drama. Some apps display cheaper plans. GoodShort starts near $5.99, and ShortMax lists $9.99. These passes all renew automatically. Forget for four weeks and you pay four times as much.
Can I get a monthly or yearly plan?
Some apps do offer them. ReelShort’s blog lists a yearly plan at roughly $199.99. The monthly price varies between pages. So that figure remains unconfirmed. DramaWave lists around $36.99 a month. ShortMax lists only weekly passes in the US.
Can I watch for free, without paying?
Yes, if you are patient. Begin with each series’ free opening episodes. Use rewarded ads to unlock more. Keep a daily check-in streak alive. There are also official ReelShort channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion. You get the most by combining all four.
Subscriptions and Cancelling
A weekly pass keeps renewing until you stop it. That takes by surprise plenty of people. Once you know where, cancelling is fast. Where to cancel depends on how you paid. App stores cancel what was bought in them. Companies manage website purchases.
Does deleting the app cancel the subscription?
No, and this is a common mistake. Apple states that removing an app does not end its subscription. The same goes for uninstalling, according to Google. My Drama’s terms carry the same warning. Until you cancel, the pass renews. Cancel first, then delete.
How do I cancel on iPhone?
Open the Settings app to begin. At the top, tap your name. Then go to Subscriptions. Select the drama app from the list. Tap Cancel, then confirm. Do it a day before renewal to be safe.
How do I cancel on Android?
Begin by opening the Google Play Store app. Go to your Subscriptions list. Find the drama app there and select it. Tap Cancel and follow the steps shown. Do not forget that uninstalling cancels nothing. Recheck the list to make sure of the change.
Can I cancel within the app?
Sometimes, though the store route is safer. ShortMax’s terms describe an in-app option under About Subscription. Store buyers are sent to App Store or Google Play. Only what Apple and Google billed is under their control. If you bought on the website, contact the company. Take a screenshot of every cancellation.
Why was I charged once a free trial ended?
The way trials are worded can be confusing. ShortMax’s developer admits its “free trial” and “24 hours free” labels confused people. Passes renew 24 hours before expiry, according to its terms. The renewal costs the same price. Cancel one day before any trial runs out. Afterward, check that the store shows it cancelled.
Refunds
The refund route depends on who took your money. Google deals with Play charges. Apple deals with App Store charges. The companies deal with their own website charges. No route promises a refund. This table shows every path.
| Where you paid | How to cancel | Refund route | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone (App Store) | Settings, your name, Subscriptions, Cancel | Apple’s Report a Problem page | Removing the app does not cancel |
| Android (Google Play) | Google Play, Subscriptions, Cancel | Google within 48 hours, and after that the developer | Uninstalling won’t cancel |
| Website | The app company’s account or support | The app company alone | Often non-refundable, according to My Drama’s terms |
How do I get an Apple refund?
Apple’s Report a Problem page is the place to go. Log in using the Apple ID that was charged. Choose the charge, then explain briefly. Apple usually responds within 24 to 48 hours. It is Apple that decides, not the app maker. Remember to cancel the pass too, or it will renew.
How do refunds work on Google Play?
Timing is the biggest factor here. Within 48 hours of purchase, you may get a refund, Google says. Request it via Google Play directly. Contact the developer after that window. ReelShort users are directed to Profile, then Feedback. If a renewal surprises you, act quickly.
What happens with website purchases?
Those purchases go through the app company. Neither Apple nor Google can help there. My Drama’s terms call web purchases non-refundable except where law requires. Its terms offer a 14-day withdrawal right to EU and UK users. Other companies make their own rules. Before you pay online, read the terms.
Can I refund unused coins?
Usually not, and the terms state it. Coin purchases are final, under My Drama’s terms. Unless its own fault makes a product unusable, ShortMax refuses refunds. With accidental buys, a store request may help. Stick to the smallest coin pack until a series grabs you. Then mistakes cost you less.
Staying Safe from Look-Alike Apps

Confusion over names is everywhere here. A misspelling can lead to little-known unrelated apps. Some sites are copies of major brands. A few of the downloads are unsafe. Sticking to real names protects your money. These answers sort the real from the fake.
Is there an app called Real Short?
No, not as far as we could find. Real Short is simply ReelShort misspelled. So are “real short app”, “realshot”, “reel shot” and probably “shot shorts” too. The real name comes as a single word. The seller shown on the App Store is New Leaf Publishing. Before downloading, check that.
What exactly are ReelBox, DailyShort and GoldShort TV?
They are small, unrelated apps. ReelBox, which people find via “reel box” or “reelbox tv”, has 50K+ Android installs. There is no link between it and ReelShort or DramaBox. DailyShort, often typed “daily short”, has 100K+ installs. With 10K+ installs, GoldShort TV is an Android TV app. Most searchers are likely looking for GoodShort.
Are ShortTV and ShortMax the same?
Very likely, although it is unconfirmed. ShortMax’s legal entity is SHORTTV LIMITED based in Hong Kong. Visitors to its website land on ShortTV’s site. Both apps launched in September 2023. No official rename announcement turned up. Searching “short tv” or “short max” also turns up unrelated apps.
Are mod APKs and coin generators safe?
No, and not a single one is official. Mod APKs are modified app copies from outside official stores. One look-alike of DramaBox openly calls its download an unofficial modified version. Coin generators, too, are unofficial. You cannot verify what they do. Stick to the official stores and websites.
Why is ReelShort rated so low on Trustpilot?
ReelShort’s Trustpilot page shows 1.3 out of 5 from 250 reviews. A frequent complaint is being charged after cancelling. Weekly auto-renewals are often mentioned. Coin prices and refused refunds are mentioned by others. Any review site reflects those who chose to post. Use it as a list of things to check rather than a verdict.
