The Story That Built Denim Tears: Tremaine Emory’s Bigger Picture
The first recorded ship bearing enslaved Africans arrived in the English colony of Virginia in 1619. Four hundred years later, in 2019, Tremaine Emory founded a clothing brand and put a wreath of cotton onto a pair of jeans. That, in two sentences, is the entire premise of Denim Tears, and almost everything the brand has released since traces back to it. Where much of streetwear takes imagery and hopes the question never lands, this brand starts from the why and lets the garments follow. The result has been a era-defining run of items that people line up for, resell and argue about, and a body of work that feels more like a continuous argument than a seasonal catalogue. What follows is the story of how that argument came together, one release at a time.
